Top Tips for Safe Air Travel While Pregnant

"Essential reading for pregnant brides-to-be planning a honeymoon!"

Air travel while pregnant is generally considered to be safe until the eighth month.

air travel during pregnancy As a general rule, you may be able to fly
  • until you are up to 36 weeks pregnant on short-haul routes, and
  • between 32-35 weeks for long-haul flights.
In all cases, you will need to carry appropriate certification from your doctor with you, confirming that you are considered medically fit to travel.
Before you book, you will also need to make contact with the airline you plan to fly with to check their terms and conditions relating to air travel while pregnant.

As different airlines tend to have different rules, which are liable to change, it's best to contact the airline you plan to fly with to check their policy. If you are planning to come to the Channel Islands for your wedding or honeymoon, I recommend you compare flights to Jersey with www.cheapflights.co.uk

You will need to carry a medical certificate after 28 weeks and most airlines will not let you fly after 36 weeks.

The reason most airlines stop you from flying during the last few weeks of pregnancy, is because they are not fully equipped or trained to help you if you go into labour during the flight.

Don't forget to take into account the date of your return journey when working out your dates.

Air travel while pregnant is best during your second trimester If you book your holiday direct, you should be able to call the airline or check their terms and conditions online. Alterntively, if you have booked via a travel agent, they will be able to check this on your behalf.

The best time to plan air travel while you are pregnant, is during your second trimester (between weeks 15 and 28) when the risk of miscarriage or premature labour is lower.

It's also the time when you are likely to be feeling at your best ... any morning sickness should be over and the tiredness of late pregnancy won't have set in yet!

Whenever you're planning air travel while pregnant, it's a good idea to talk your plans through with your medical caregiver ... before you make a reservation or any financial committment.

Before You Travel

(You should carry a letter from your doctor, whenever you plan any air travel while pregnant, confirming that you are pregnant and all other relevant information to help with your care and safety in case you are taken ill.)

Do You Need Luggage or a new Carryon?

Be sure to plan well ahead, because a wheeled bag is an absolute essential for your maternity honeymoon!

Tips To Help You Once In The Air

  • Comfortable, loose clothing and shoes will add to your level of comfort hugely. Pack some extra layers in your cabin baggage, just in case you are cold during the flight.
  • Hydrate yourself well before take-off by drinking plenty of water. Continue to drink water only during the flight. It is your honeymoon, but this is definitely not the time to think 'one alcoholic drink is OK!' It's also wise to avoid all caffeinated and carbonated drinks, as these will dehydrate you.
  • Fix your the seat belt firmly under your bump
  • Let the cabin crew know that you are pregnant.
  • Move around as much as you can. Take a regular walk (even if it is just to the loo and back)and remember to rotate your ankles regularly. This will help to prevent problems with swollen ankles.

Your Pregnancy Travel Insurance

As pregnancy is classed as a 'pre-existing condition', it's important to check your travel insurance policy to see if you will be covered for any 'complications of pregnancy' that might arise. The last thing you want to worry about on your maternity honeymoon is the prospect of a huge hospital bill from a foreign country.
