Easy Instructions for How to Make Your Own Wedding Garter
One of the best solutions to finding cheap wedding garters you'll be proud to show off is to make your own. I hope you'll be pleasantly surprised when you find out exactly how easy it is to make your own wedding garter ... even if you have very limited sewing experience!
Apart from saving money, one of the best things about making your own garter is that you get to choose the exact style you want, the silk or lace you prefer and how to decorate your garter to suit your personal taste.
Lots of brides choose to have two garters ... one to be a fabulous wedding keepsake with another one for the garter toss!
And don't forget that it's quite traditional to include 'something blue' in your garter too!
The Materials You Will Need for Your Cheap Wedding Garters
- 1.5cm / 1/2 inch wide elastic,
- Silky or taffeta fabric, 10cm / 3 inches wide and 1 1/2 times the width of your thigh, just above your knee ... or select wide ribbon instead!
- One or more lengths of any lace you fancy, the same width as your thigh measurement
The Wedding Garter Toss Tradition
This wedding tradition dates back to medieval England and France when guests would crowd into the bridal chamber, hoping to snatch the bride's stockings or garter for good luck.
Today the groom removes his bride's garter during the wedding and tosses it behind him to the single male guests.
This is a very popular tradition.
- Dressmaking pins and needles
- Scissors
- Scraps of narrow ribbon for decorative bows
- Beads, crystals or 'silver' trinkets for final decorative touches
- Thread, to match your fabric and lace
- Measuring tape
- Safety pin
Step-By Step Instructions
- Measure around your thigh to work out the right length of fabric and lace to use. Use one and a half times this length to create your garter.
- Fold your length of fabric in half, bringing the long edges together and keeping the right side of the fabric on the inside.
Stitch along the long edge, then turn the fabric tube right side out
- Press the fabric tube carefully, keeping the seam in the middle at the back
- Trim the fabric strip with your chosen lace, handsewing the lace in position ... take care to sew through only one thickness of the fabric tube
- Attach the safety pin to one end of the elastic, then use the safety pin to thread the elastic through the fbric tube (making sure to hold onto the other end!)
- Check the garter fit on your thigh and adjust the elastic length to fit comfortably
- Hand or machine sew the ends of the fabric and lace tube together, keeping right sides together as you sew them. Press the seam open and stitch the raw edges by hand
- Trim your finished garter with the bows, pearls, beads or crystals you have chosen
Think about creating a second, cheaper version just for the garter toss!
