Making your own empire maternity wedding dress

If the maternity wedding dress you're planning to make will have a gathered chiffon overlay, you will need to create similar fullness in the underskirt, to make sure you will have sufficient room for your baby bump.

But you don't need to create the fullness with gathering, as this could make your dress look bulky at the empire bodice - especially if your underskirt fabric is medium / heavyweight.

One great alternative is to use darts, which will give you the fullness you want, without the bulkiness of gathers.
