So why are maternity weddings suddenly so popular? Leaving aside the obvious problems posed by unplanned teenage pregnancies, many bridal boutiques are reporting that the expectant brides they see are women in their twenties and thirties ... most often in established relationships.
Is this maternity wedding trend driven by the number of modern pregnant celebrities who have recently taken a trip down the aisle with a bun in the oven? Is it simply because it's very commonplace for couples today to 'try before they buy' (ie co-habit)? After all, it would be pretty hypocritical for society to endorse couples living together, clearly in a sexual relationship, then to pillory those for whom a planned or unplanned pregnancy occurs. Or could the growing army of pregnant brides be as a result of women who have focused on their education and career, having a ticking biological clock that simply won't wait for a prolonged engagement? Whatever the reason, pregnant brides are out and proud today ... often celebrating their weddings in much the same way they would have done if they hadn't been pregnant. Most families are supportive and ready to celebrate with maternity brides. And wedding dress designers have been quick to recognise this market, catering well to increased demand.
